International Hibernation Symposium 2027

Bologna- Italy, 7-11 June 2027

From Physiological Adaptation to Translational Science

Held every three years, the International Hibernation Symposium will bring the global hibernation research community to Bologna for the XVIII edition of the conference.

This comes at a pivotal moment for the field: long studied as a remarkable adaptation in a limited number of species, hibernation is now emerging as a powerful biological paradigm with far-reaching translational potential.

The ability to reversibly induce hibernation-like states, characterized by coordinated reductions in metabolism, temperature, and energy demand, is rapidly transitioning from comparative biology to applied science, opening new perspectives across multiple domains.

For this reason, the 2027 Symposium will place human physiology at the center of its vision, aiming to foster dialogue across disciplines ranging from molecular biology and physiology to ethology and ecological sciences.

The latest advances in hibernation research will be presented, providing a timely and authoritative overview of the state of the art in this rapidly expanding field, as well as a stepping stone for the development of novel strategies in medicine and space exploration.

As the oldest university in the western world, the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna will welcome all the attendees to help define the future trajectory of the field, accelerating our understanding of hibernation and facilitating the translation of hibernation-inspired applications into real-world solutions.
